About the Artist and his Work |
Intarsia is a form of artwork believed to have originated in Italy in the 14th century and flourished during that period. However, because intarsia was so labor intensive, it was primarily found in the homes of the very elite. Over time intarsia became a lost art; however, in recent years, due to the modernization of man and equipment, intarsia has again become extremely popular.
My Intarsia creations are made from both domestic and imported woods, oftentimes using eight to ten different species in a design. I primarily use cedar of various colors, California Redwood, Basswood, Fir, Poplar, Pine, Wenje, Peruvian Walnut, Osage Orange, Paduke, Purple Heart, Maple, Oak, Spanish Oak, Aromatic Cedar, American Black Walnut, Mansonia, and other as requested for my intarsia creations. |

The intarsia designs will vary in the number of pieces from as few as twelve upward to well over 100. Each piece is hand cut using a band saw or scroll saw, hand sanded and shaped to match the adjoining piece and glued firmly to a backing of mahogany. Pieces are raised or lowered to create whatever depth or dimension needed to accentuate the specific intarsia design giving almost a 3-D effect to the creation. Each intarsia creation is unique in that no two will ever be identical due to woods used.
There are no stains or paints used on my intarsia. Each piece of wood is selected for its color and grain with numerous coats of a clear sealer applied to enhance and protect the natural beauty of the wood. |

When I retired from the field of law enforcement in 1990, I thought I was going to spend the remainder of my days enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest sitting in a boat on the Straits of Juan de Fuca, reeling in salmon and halibut. I envisioned the balance of my time on the golf course brushing up on a game I thoroughly enjoyed. However, fate dealt me a hand I least expected. I found myself physically unable to do the things I had previously enjoyed.
Then I was introduced to the world of intarsia. A friend, with lots of encouragement and guidance, turned me on to what has now become an addiction. My day is never complete unless I have spent time in my shop. Intarsia provides me with a challenge, a sense of satisfaction and keeps me out of my wife's hair - which in turn makes her happy. |
|
| Originally I worked exclusively from intarsia patterns from such fine folks as Judy Gail Roberts and others, oftentimes modifying a design at the request of a customer or to my own liking. Then I received my first custom order. This has opened a whole new dimension to the world of intarsia for me, and one that I thoroughly enjoy. A picture of something or someone special can be used to design an intarsia replica. Please feel free to contact me for a custom intarsia request. |
