The Grange, a community organization, is composed of families and individuals who share an interest in their communities and who seek to help keep America strong through local Grange leadership. With Granges across the country in position to address the varied needs of the rural, small town and suburban areas they serve, thousands of Grangers are working together to improve their own and their neighbors' quality of living through programs of community service and personal betterment.

The benefits of Grange programs cannot be measured in dollars but by increased community cooperation as people work together, resulting in a spirit of self-reliance and true Americanism. Granges have contributed much by:

Here are two examples of local Grange initiative: A local Grange became concerned about the poor condition of certain bridges in the community. After trying unsuccessfully to interest the county government in the matter, the Grange led the way. A Community Service Committee was formed to mobilize the members and obtain needed supplies. Fund-raisers were held and publicity provided. In less than a year 32 bridges had been repaired and painted, and approaches cleared.

Elsewhere, in an area which was formerly without a newspaper, a Grange publishes a free paper carrying local news and advertising twice a month, and delivers it to distribution points.

The success of these projects and others like them show what a group of people can accomplish when they plan and work together - when they marshal all available resources for the common good. Local people studying their community's needs and undertaking responses to those needs are part of our American tradition.

As our communities continue to be affected by technological change, the Grange will keep on contributing experience, initiative and leadership for the general good. Also, through its activities and programs, the Grange develops leaders and good citizens for tomorrow.
